Two hours on a gentoo beach, and nobody else in the car
Bertha's Beach takes its name from the shipwrecked barque Bertha. It lies on Fitzroy
Farm, near Mount Pleasant, and it is both an Important Bird Area and a Ramsar wetland. The
gentoo penguins are the reason you go: a colony that walks down to the surf and back. You
may also see Magellanic penguins, South American terns and the flightless steamer duck
that lives nowhere else.
The day is private, and that changes how it feels. You stay as long as you like at each
stop within the four to five hours, and the guide shapes the drive to what you want to
see. Expect your guide to be firm about the distances on the beach, because the colony
comes first.
The farm is a longer drive than Gypsy Cove, and the weather can differ from Stanley's.
Bring a warm, waterproof layer even if the town is bright. The last half hour is in
Stanley, or on a drive through town, whichever you prefer.

Bertha's Beach or Gypsy Cove: which is better for penguins?
Gypsy Cove is closer and free: a public reserve 6.5 km from town, with Magellanic penguins in burrows and gentoos next door at Yorke Bay. Bertha's Beach is a gentoo colony on a white-sand Ramsar beach on Fitzroy Farm, about an hour's drive out, with a landowner's charge. Pick Bertha's Beach if you have four hours or more.
What are Falkland Islands ticket prices for the penguin beaches?
Gypsy Cove and Yorke Bay, in the Cape Pembroke nature reserve, are free and open at all times. Bertha's Beach, Kelp Point and Volunteer Point are on private farms that charge for access, and the landowners publish no figure. Every tour we list that visits them includes the charge in its fare.
Should you book a private or a shared tour?
Shared tours are the cheaper way to see Yorke Bay and Gypsy Cove, from about $133 per person in groups of up to fifteen or sixteen. Private tours cost about $333 to $565 per person but run to your ship's hours and your pace, and they reach Bertha's Beach and Kelp Point. Volunteer Point has one option, with four seats to a vehicle.
What should you wear on a Falklands penguin tour?
Windproof and waterproof layers, a warm hat and shoes you can walk in over sand. Stanley's summer highs are about 12 to 13°C, and the wind makes an open beach feel far colder. Bring a cover for your camera and binoculars if you have them.
Can you cancel a Falkland Islands tour?
